by October 24, 2025

A new investigation has been launched by the Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office targeting former Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu and several associates on suspicion of espionage. The case also includes Nejati Ozkan, Imamoglu’s former campaign manager, and Merdan Yanardagh, the editor-in-chief of the Tele 1 media outlet.

Authorities conducted searches at the offices of Tele 1 on the morning of October 24, leading to Yanardagh’s arrest. His residence was also searched, with officials reporting the seizure of evidence. Investigators allege that the group formed a criminal organization engaged in espionage activities for the benefit of foreign nations, with additional accusations of illicit enrichment.

According to reports, materials obtained by investigators include classified military information and photographs of foreign passports.

Imamoglu, who is currently incarcerated on separate corruption charges, will now face questioning as part of this new espionage investigation.
