Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa has departed for the United States, where he is scheduled to speak at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. This marks the first visit by a Syrian head of state to the United States in nearly six decades.
The Syrian leader’s participation in the high-level diplomatic gathering was confirmed by official sources. Al-Sharaa assumed office last December following a political transition that ended the long-standing rule of former President Bashar al-Assad.
His appearance at the UN General Assembly represents a significant diplomatic moment, being the first by a Syrian leader since Nureddin Al-Atasi addressed the international body in 1967. The visit signals a new chapter in Syria’s engagement with the global community.
