FORMER LEADER WARNS OF WIDENING POWER GAP WITH AZERBAIJAN

by September 19, 2025

A former head of state has issued a stark assessment of the nation’s strategic position, arguing that a policy of maintaining the current situation is based on a precarious assumption. The core of this strategy, he suggests, is the belief that the international community will eventually accept the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh.

While this approach may have theoretical merit and some historical precedent, the central question remains whether the country possesses the endurance to uphold this status quo for decades. The primary concerns are the capacity of the domestic economy to withstand blockades and international isolation, as well as the nation’s overall resilience in the face of its longstanding rival.

The official’s analysis points to a significant shift in the regional balance of power. He notes that a decade ago, the two nations were relatively comparable in terms of human, economic, and military resources. Today, however, he observes a vast and growing gap in these critical areas, a development he finds deeply troubling.

He defines a national defeat not merely as a military loss, but as the failure to alert the populace to imminent dangers. He warns against lulling the public into a false sense of security, which could lead to a sudden realization of an irreversible situation.

Emphasizing his long-standing political principles, the former leader stated he has always prioritized honesty over popularity. He pledged to continue presenting the truth to the people, regardless of how difficult it may be, and to avoid empty promises, demagoguery, and populism. He reflected on his consistent stance since the national movement began, which he believes ultimately led to the establishment of an independent state and a liberated Artsakh.
