A new opera depicting the impact of war through the lens of a single family has premiered in Boston to a full house. Titled “Silent Tears,” the work by composer Grigori Balasanyan was presented in collaboration with the Fenway Opera Club in November 2024.
The production, based on a true story set during a 44-day conflict, was met with a deeply emotional response from the audience. Following its successful debut, plans are reportedly underway to stage the opera in other cities across the United States.
The young composer’s journey into music began at the age of eight. His first album was released when he was ten, and by twelve, an original dance performance set to his music was staged in his home country. His first ballet, later recorded by a national symphony orchestra, is recognized as the first children’s ballet in the nation’s musical history.
His career reached a significant milestone in March 2024 with a debut at Carnegie Hall, where he presented original compositions as part of a concert series dedicated to showcasing musical talent.
Since enrolling at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee in 2022, the composer has had the opportunity to present a wide range of works. He has received financial support for his education through scholarships from the conservatory and other foundations.
He expressed appreciation for the platform the United States provides, noting the freedom to express his perspectives through music and the active community of collaborators. The environment, he stated, ensures his compositions find an audience and contribute to the cultural landscape.
Looking ahead, the composer is set to graduate a year ahead of schedule and has applied to several universities to pursue a master’s degree, with a PhD to follow. A final decision on his postgraduate studies is expected in April. He is currently at work on a new opera.
